The American National Standards Institute approves the process a standards developer uses, and a document that comes through that process carries the “ANSI/” prefix. Two things drive the actual number: how many separate titles your specs and programs cite, and how many people need to open them. Check the license before you plan on sharing a PDF. Many standards are sold with single-user or device-specific restrictions, and some are DRM-protected. The Edition Trap: OSHA Cites Older Editions Than the One on Sale

OSHA’s PPE rules incorporate consensus standards by reference — but the edition named in the regulation is frozen at the time of the rulemaking. 29 CFR 1910.133(b)(1) identifies ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2010, ANSI Z87.1-2003, and ANSI Z87.1-1989 (R-1998) as the incorporated editions. The current edition on the ANSI Webstore is Z87.1-2025. That is three revisions past what OSHA names. Section 1910.133(b)(2) also allows protective devices the employer demonstrates are at least as effective as devices built to one of the incorporated editions.

So which edition should you buy?

Start with the edition your regulation, contract, customer specification, or internal program actually requires. If you are considering a newer edition, verify how that edition fits your specific compliance basis rather than assuming that “newer” automatically replaces the edition OSHA incorporated by reference. In practice, the eyewear on the market today is marked to the current standard, so your PPE hazard assessment and eyewear spec need to name the edition you are working to — and it should be one you own and can open.

The practical rule: identify the compliance basis first, then buy the edition that supports it.

The same edition problem can arise with A10 and Z359. OSHA’s construction requirements in 29 CFR 1926 and its guidance have been developed alongside the ANSI fall protection standards, but the edition and regulatory status of any particular reference vary by provision. Check the actual OSHA provision, contract, customer specification, or project requirement before assuming the newest ANSI edition is the required one. “We Follow OSHA — Why Pay for a Standard at All?”

This is the objection every safety manager hears from the person signing the purchase order. It deserves a straight answer.

OSHA regulations are written as minimum requirements, and many of them are light on method. 1910.133 tells you eye protection is required and points you at Z87.1. It does not tell you how to select impact-rated eyewear for a grinding cell, what the D3 splash marking means, or how to match lens shade to a welding process. That detail lives in the standard. When an incident review, a customer audit, or a compliance officer asks how you selected the protection you issued, “we follow OSHA” is not an answer. The standard is.

There is a second reason. Owners and general contractors write ANSI standards directly into safety specifications and prequalification packages. If the spec says fall protection equipment shall meet Z359.11 and your program cannot cite the edition, you have a documentation gap before the first worker is on site.

The better question is not whether the standard costs $75, $144, or $1,175. It is whether the standard is part of the requirement you are responsible for meeting, and whether owning the correct edition gives the people writing and maintaining your program access to the criteria they need.

How to Buy ANSI Safety Standards on the ANSI Webstore

What Is ANSI Z10?

ANSI/ASSP Z10.0-2019 is a voluntary American National Standard for occupational health and safety management systems. The ANSI-accredited Z10 committee was approved under the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) in 1999, though the first published edition of the standard didn’t arrive until 2005 — revised in 2012, then again in 2019. Following the 2012 revision, AIHA handed off the Z10 committee — along with copyright — to the American Society of Safety Engineers, now the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP).

Z10 draws on the same management-system logic as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and on International Labor Organization (ILO) guidelines for OHS management. The current 2019 edition follows a Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle and covers management leadership, employee participation, planning, implementation, evaluation, and corrective action.

The key thing to understand: Z10 conformance is self-declared. There’s no accredited registrar auditing your operation against Z10 and issuing a certificate the way there is for ISO management system standards. Organizations use it as an internal benchmark, a framework for structuring a safety program, or a reference during OSHA-related audits — not as something a customer can verify through a public certification database.


What Is ISO 45001?

ISO 45001:2018 is the international standard for occupational health and safety management systems, published by the International Organization for Standardization in March 2018. It replaced OHSAS 18001 as the global reference point for OHSMS certification.

ISO 45001 shares the same Annex SL high-level structure as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001:2026 — a deliberate design choice that makes integrated management systems easier to build and audit together. Organizations pursue ISO 45001 certification through accredited third-party registrars, and the resulting certificate can provide internationally recognized evidence of conformity to the standard, and may be requested by customers, contractors, insurers, or other interested parties.

A revision — expected to be designated ISO 45001:2027 — is in development, with a first Committee Draft published in mid-2025 and a second draft circulated in early 2026. Organizations should base current certification and implementation decisions on the published 2018 edition until ISO and the relevant accreditation bodies establish a formal transition timeline.
